Flash Filled Fun...
... with Mitch Taylor.
Here are some shots taken over 2 nights locally in Perth. Shooting flash surf photos is never a walk in the park, there are so many variables especially the quickly fading light that controls and alters your backgrounds and the appearance of your subject. You literally have a 45 minute window between the sun being too bright and the black of night approaching. To me it's always about testing the elements but the truth is it's the elements that are really testing you.
Having said that, if it all comes together you can nail some eye catching and thought provoking images. In all honesty, I've never taken a flash shot I've been truly happy with, but hopefully that image isn't too far away!
Big Thanks to Mitch Taylor and Brad Norris for being legends!

The Anatomy of the 30 Minute Power Surf...
The phone rings at 7.30am, I answer it.
"Maxi, you keen to shoot?"
"Not sure I've got the time Mitch, sorry mate"
"I'm headin down to check it now, apparently there's a couple of waves!"
"Ok, Itchy, I'll pack the gear in the car and head down on the way to the office"
8.10am beach arrival...usual chit chat and admiration of jogging females... 8.18am shoot commences.
CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK!
8.47am shoot ceases... 9.03am office arrival!
Job done before I'd even started work!

Drop Wallets & Dugites...
... A quick early morning sling with Ben Macca and Mitch Taylor didn't amount to much except a broken board, a lot of seaweed and my first snake sighting of the season.

Surprise, Surprise...
This morning was a bit of a shock. I rolled over in bed at 6am and with one eye open checked the swell buoys and the live winds to find that it was surprisingly offshore with a little pulse of swell! A quick phone call to Luke Campbell and 30 mins later we were shooting. While it started off promising, the swell died pretty quickly, but I still managed a few frames before starting a day of work! Bring on the autumn swells!

Summer Stylin...
I've been home for about 5 days so far this month. Unfortunately the waves haven't been pumping, but I did manage to sneak in one or two sessions before jetting off once again. Check out the lads at Trigg below. More from Mitch taylor tomorrow.
