Home Is Where The Heat Is...

After 3 weeks away it's great to be back on home soil! But to tell you the truth, hot weather gets the better of me and to fly back home and be greeted by 5 consecutive days of near on 40 degree heat has knocked me around! Still, to be home is a great feeling and to be able to shoot some shots in this crazy weather has got me amped on a fresh start in 2012! Below are a handful of shots from the last week.

2012 is just around the corner and this is the last time I will blog for 2011!

So I figure for the few of you that bother checking this site, I'll countdown my Top 11 from 11!

11. Luke Campbell in Perth.

For those of you that know Perth, we don't get good waves full stop. I have driven home past this place for the last 10 years and have never seen it break. Since posting this on the blog in August I have had several emails telling me that it has indeed broken before, but it is a complete freak of nature with the bank disappearing within days everytime! A good mate, getting holla'd at by his good mates while they're drinking beer, does life get any better? Not in Perth it doesn't!

10. Golden Hour in Perth.

Just 20 mins after taking the above shot of Luke, I ventured in to the water with a new lens and port combo I had never used! I was amazed with this result, sharp, colourful and something I'd be proud to put up in the pool room!

9. Luke Campbell in Perth.

Yes, you heard me right, this is a Perth Metro Beachie at it's very best. Luke and I put a lot of hard yards in together looking for fun waves close to home. This was one of the few days this year when Huey delivered! Could have framed it better, but still stoked with the image considering! Standups at Home!

8. Hoseanui at The Box.

There's nothing more rewarding than nailing a sick shot of your best mate surfing! Actually there is and that's when that shot gets run in a magazine! Now Hose isn't that good at much, but when he scooped into this wide inside nugget, I knew we were on! I remember when I found out Riptide were using this image, I felt like a little kid and was so excited, I couldn't wait to tell him!

7. Chad Jackson at The Right.

I didn't think too much when I shot this frame, thinking it just like the 15 other dodgy waves i'd seen that morning. But upon closer inspection I paid attention to the crazy way the lip had folded inward creating a Niagra Falls type effect! I liked it so much I sent it to SportsIllustrated.com. They liked it so much that they used it as their photo of the day smack bang in the middle of the World Series. The image has since had over a million hits!

6. Ryan Hardy in Mandurah.

Hardy is a photographers dream, he's so calculated and so critical of his art. Everything came together for this shot, the light, the background, the wettie/slick colour combo that makes him look like a half eaten toffee apple and the excessive jaw flexing! 3 Mags passed on this image, thankfully VS loved it enough to use it as an advert!

5. Brad Hughes at Rottnest Island.

If you step out of your comfort zone, you often get rewarded... or killed! This image was taken just weeks before a diver was eaten by a Great White in this area! I had been swimming for hours with my brand new pole setup and was lucky enough to nail this double page spread for Movement on the only decent wave to come through all day! I got out of there as quickly as I could!

4. Jake Stone at Mitchells.

This was the quickest and most successful water shoot of my life! In 20 secs I had shot 2x Double Pagers and 2x Adverts all using different frames! If only all my shoots were that productive!

This shot captures a cool kid in a refreshing barrel and showcases what I love most about this wave which are the rocky outcrops! Whilst the rocks have taken many a layer of skin from a big toe, they provide a great check spot, a comfortable vantage point, an epic background and the perfect place to stick a tripod!

3. Chad Jackson at A Beachie.

This is the best water shot I have ever taken and not only because there's a naked handsome devil with incredible facial hair in it. For anyone who has ever used a fish eye, you'll understand the huge area that the lens covers, and if you pay close attention to this image, you'll notice that practically the entire lip of the wave is simultaneously impacting the sand without yet causing disruption or messing up the barrel. This day was heavier than the photo would indicate, it was big and sketchy and Chad was like a pig in mud, he had no problems with it, none at all!

2. Mitch Rawlins at The Right.

This wave sneaks in at #2 because it scored me my first ever cover of a magazine. Movement Issue 39 is just hitting stores now and if you're lucky, you'll get your hands on this limited edition cover! Mitch is an amazing surfer and a great bloke with a lot of good stories to tell, i'm sure this wave is just one of the hundreds of epic barrels he scored in 2011!

1. James Purvis at The Box.

I'm not sure why, but I honestly think this is the best photo I have ever taken!

I never get sick of looking at it and it makes me smile. The memories of that day may have something to do with it, but i'm not entirely sure! Maybe it's the fact that Jimmy seems too keen to take on a 15 minute paddle out to The Box with only 20 minutes of light left that reminds me of how stoked I was about surfing when I was his age!

I saw it, I shot it and that was it, no checking composition, no adjusting of my settings, just BANG!

Richie VS The Cobra

Richie Vas is one RAD human being!

He hails from the notoriously tough suburb of Maroubra in Sydney's eastern suburbs and is a proud member of the infamous "Bra Boys"! When he's not starring in feature films (check out Fighting Fear), he's training and competing as an MMA Fighter and when he's not doing that, he's chasing down crazy slabs of water like the one below.

I've been scouring the mags of late and Richie hasn't received any exposure from this particular session late this year, which is odd because from what I witnessed, he was charging harder than most other guys out there! Check out this sequence from one of the craziest slabs I shot all year! Richie Vas taking the cobra head on!

The only thing gnarlier than Richie are my Photoshop skills! Ssssssss!

... the minute summer rears its head and blesses us with warm summer rays and bikini clad beaches, you hear the excitement in peoples voices as they talk about working on their tans, long afternoon drinking sessions, boozy christmas parties, endless public holidays and their latest swimwear purchase!

But you know what gets me pumped about Summer? It's this, the DSA! The simple act of lending a helping hand to those would normally find it difficult to access the ocean.

I can't explain in words to you the joy that is gained from seeing the laughter on the face of a boy as he stares in amazement at the refreshing waters runnig through his toes and finger tips on a 36 degree day, or the tear running down the check of a woman who hasn't been in the ocean for over 2 years because it's simply too hard to do it on her own! And I sure as hell can't explain the purely grounding experience taken from the simple gesture of an 8 year old girl kissing you on the cheek and thanking you as you carry her from the cool saltwater across the scorching sand and back to her wheelchair.

No...You just have to make the effort experience it for yourself, I promise you it's unforgettable!

Trown Town...

... Trent Brown is a bloke you probably wouldn't have heard too much of, I sometimes think that he likes it that way. A chilled, quiet and humble bloke who seems to pop his head out from the woodwork whenever the waves are pumping. In fact I had unknowingly shot some sick images of a "mystery" rider charging Mitchells Wedge early in 2009 only to realise months later that they were of Trent.

Fast forward nearly 2 years I have hung on to this first shot for over 12 months hoping that one of the mags would snavel it up and find a use for it, but to no avail! So here it is in all its glory, one of my favourite shots of 2010... Trent Brown, mid flight inside a Box.

Here's hoping we can hook up and shoot a few more like it in 2012!

Chasing Chaddy...

... I'm gonna say it, straight up, Chad Jackson is Underrated. He's a rare breed, confident yet quiet, rugged yet polished, relaxed yet swamped. I understand that it's probably a bit brash of me to label a bloke who has had the last 2 covers of International Bodyboard Magazines as underrated, but I stand by my judgement.

I have as much respect for Chad as I do for my other favourite subjects Hughesy & Rawlins. All 3 are ridiculously hard workers who have helped progress the sport to the next level. But Chad has done so with less limelight than the other two. I could go on for days about what makes Chad an elite sportsman, but it's his efforts to do his best at everything he attempts that makes him a leader.

Granted I don't spend as much time with other bodyboarders around the globe as I do with the WA boys but you can't deny that Chad's a small wave demolisher, big wave slayer, swell chaser, cover king, business entrepreneur, smiling assassin, all round sportsman and just a down to earth fucking good bloke.

Freaky Flash Feast...

... Over the past few months (when time permits), I have been hitting the waters of Trigg & Scarborough in the late evening with a new Aquatech flash set up. The results have been frustrating yet satisfying and even a little bit rewarding. It's not as easy as you would think, but when it all comes together, you can capture some pretty unique images!

A Grumpy Hughes...

... is way better than a dead one! For those of you that haven't yet seen it, check out Brad Hughes' Horrendous 2 Wave Hold Down! at "The Right" last weekend.
It seemed like a pretty standard wave for Hughesy, but with an ocean that raw and powerful, you can never let your guard down. Sitting in the saftey of a boat in the channel, it's almost as if we were holding our breath as long as Brad was hoping to see some sign of his board or head pop up to the surface. Thankfully Rawlins and Chaddy had put their ski in a position that the minute they saw him, they'd be there to scoop him up and get him to saftey.
The beating has taken Brad a few days to recover from, but given that he suffered no major damage, I'm sure you'll see him as keen as ever to tackle the next swell that graces our shores! That's what makes him one of the best, if not, THE best big wave bodyboarder on the planet!

... Scarborough Beach turned on the best conditions of the year for Volcom's VQS Surf Event! Sunny, 28, pumping waves and the largest field of entrants we have ever had.

As is always the case, the event is every bit as much about the mayhem we get up to on the beach as it is about the action that takes place in the water!

The groms were pumped on the thousands of dollars worth of freebies that were given out on the day, check out some of the mayhem in the images below...

... it was late, well, late enough, 5pm to be exact. The phone rang, Luke tells me he's back home a little earlier than expected and that there are some fun little waves at the bottom of the road. So within 40 mins I had left work, battled peak hour traffic, grabbed my camera gear from home and was back at Scarborough zipping up my wettie. The mad rush was all in aid of testing out my new toys! I have a lot of refining to do, but given a little time, we could nail some gold.

There's a little story behind it, so you'll have to head out and grab yourself a copy to read it, but let me just say that after 7 hours of driving around looking for waves this day, I was proud to capture probably the best image I have ever shot from water!

Flippin' The Script...

... is exactly what Lewy Finnegan has been doing of late. This particular backflip was one I snapped at Mandurah Wedge a few months back and has just been published in the latest issue of Riptide #182. This was a very unassuming wedge that catapulted Lewy into the flats, and as you can see from the sequence he wasn't far from landing one of the biggest moves of the season!

... Trigg turned on a bit of a backlit light show this evening. The wind was offshore, there was a little pulse of swell and it ended up being an unexpected, but great afternoon to be at the beach! It certainly wasn't epic, but as far as Perth Metro standards go, it was worthy! Luke Campbell, Chris Gale (not the West indies fast bowler) and Marc Lee are below.

Movement 36 | Grand Flavour | Chad Jackson...

The team at Grand Flavour recently approached me to shoot an ad for the latest Issue of Movement with team rider Chad Jackson. We had limited time to shoot the ad, in fact only a matter of hours as the deadline for the magazine was the following day.

Chad and I had already nailed an epic invert shot (as below) from a few weeks prior, so all we had to do was shoot the portrait. Easier said than done, especially when you have to shoot a Winter campaign when the temperature is still 30 degrees plus.

The GF creative team had an idea of what they wanted, Chad and I just needed to make it happen. So we put our heads together, grabbed a hose, a portable dual flash set-up, a worthy assistant and a bit of trial and error and came up with the goods!

I was really happy with how the shot came out, especially with the pressure we were under. the lens flair that you see on the portrait was completely natural and I think it adds a little something to the image.

A solid storm front tore through Perth on Friday and clearly stirred up the banks at Trigg, so much so that Saturday morning actually had some fun waves. Luke, fresh from his State Round victory in Geraldton, showed bewildered onlookers the definition of variety!

When you start using new equipment the best thing you can do is test and test again. Experiment with different settings in different conditions and learn what works for you! This morning I made the effort to do so and was rewarded with a beach all to myself to try out some new ideas. I didn't nail what I was after, but i'm confident that next time I have a crack, i'll be just that little bit wiser.

... this is all we seem to do. In fact most people read the magazines, see the images and think to themselves, man these guys are really living the life, travelling the world and scoring epic waves everyday. Truth is, probably 1 in 10 swell chases really turns out to be both memorable and profitable. Below are some cool shots, but by no means what I was chasing and anything but a profitable trip!

This little reef break between Yallingup and Margaret River in WA's Southwest was nearly perfect earlier in the week. The sun was out, brisk offshore winds, a star studded line up, but one main ingredient was missing... swell. A huge decline in swell overnight left us all a little shattered. It showed signs of life, but unfortunately needed to be 2ft bigger! Anyway, at least I got to test the new housing!

Surprise, Surprise...

This morning was a bit of a shock. I rolled over in bed at 6am and with one eye open checked the swell buoys and the live winds to find that it was surprisingly offshore with a little pulse of swell! A quick phone call to Luke Campbell and 30 mins later we were shooting. While it started off promising, the swell died pretty quickly, but I still managed a few frames before starting a day of work! The Big Wigs...

... are all in town for the 2nd event on the IBA's world tour, The Box Comp. I had the chance to hook up with the likes of Hubb, BP, Amaury Lavernhe, Hardy, Jackson and Hughes for a few shots just south of Perth on the weekend. While I can't show you the best of the day, you have to trust me when i tell you these guys are all in fine form for the comp! Good luck especially to the West Ozzies!

...good ole Trigg! You can take that as a reference to frustration or as a refence to not expecting anything else! At least there are a couple of roses amongst the thorns, but not many, not many at all! Time to bring back the enforcers!

Honestly, where else on earth would the good locals stand for people blowing or dropping in on so many waves??

... is on a roll! In fact he could have the midas touch. The kid has been ripping of late. A couple of weeks back, he comes in from a surf and says "Maxi, did you get any shots that are ad worthy? VS are chasing one!" I looked at him and replied "not really, but we could go get one?" With his usual enthusiasm he agrees and we hit the water to see if we can squeeze anything out of the dropping swell and suss wind.

Within 5 minutes of swimming, we lined up on the cleanest pit of the day and had shot a double page ad for his board sponsor.

Since then he's announced the release of his new vid Blow Up and he's taken out the first comp of the Aussie Tour!

I'm not a betting man, but he's paying $15 to win the Box Comp. Given his form, and his double roll ability, he's the perfect smokey for the event!

... Will Swim! Fully Rad Brad and Must Pose Hose showed the world that bodysurfing is the new black! Can't ever remember swimming down south at the end of March in Boardies, but we did! The boys put on a show, and if there was such a magazine as Bodysurfers Journal, I would have absolutely cleaned up!

Disabled Surfers - March 11 Event...

... again was an absolute cracker! Difficult shorey conditions and an unfavourable wind didn't stop anyone from having the time of their life. This was the last event for the season, but I encourage every single one of you to make the effort and come down and volunteer later this year when the 2011/12 season kicks in, in November! ...a day makes. I went from shooting pumping 4-6ft offshore beachie barrels in our state's south-west, to swimming out at 1ft onshore Trigg Point. Funny thing is, that I had a fun time doing both! Luke Campbell and Timmy Fitz joined me for a super late arvo paddle.

... is the best way to view Luke Campbell as many will tell you that he's not too easy on the eyes! No, that's not true, but fading light is what WA does best and this afternoon was no exception. Campby back on home soil, a fading swell and relentless heat made my trip to the beach on sunset worthwhile!

... are rarely a good thing. This was certainly the case this morning. Plenty of promise, but very little point waking up at 6am expecting good waves, after all we are talking about Trigg Point! However, it must be said that it's a glorious day to be at the beach!

... was overhyped, well in Perth anyway. It tore apart Northam and York on Saturday afternoon, but the destruction thankfully never eventuated in Perth. It turns out all we got was a balmy 38 degree afternoon and this cool cloud formation!

... Last week I had the pleasure of having to "work" a few hours north of Sydney for 5 days. In between the surfing, drinking, cricket, midnight full moon bonfires and the burning log light sabre battles I managed to fit in a few meetings and a range release. Good times with good people makes life much easier!

... is loved by all. His mates love him, the ladies love him, I love him and he's just an all round top bloke. During a backyard cricket game I witnessed him square cut a tennis ball at full steam straight into Alex Turoy's unsuspecting face. I figure maybe Turoy is the only person who may not think as highly of Pedro as I do!
